UEFA Champions League hot favourites Barcelona were undone by Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night, in the return leg of the competition’s quarters.
When Antoine Griezmann struck the second to complete a double for the night, the Catalans knew that their goose was indeed cooked.
“Each team fought with their weapons. In the last 7 games, they had continued to remind us that they are undefeated. Tonight, it has been done,” said Atletico’s coach Diego Simeone.
In the other match of the night, Bayern Munich managed to squeeze past Portuguese outfit Benfica, after what the Munich coach termed as a tough match.
“It was a beautiful evening and congratulations to the team. This is the fifth semi-final in a row reflecting the quality of the squad. People don’t know just how complicated the Champions League is. But we are happy because we played well,” Bayern’s coach Pep Guardiola said.
Each of the four qualified teams will know their opponents on Friday after the semi-finals draw.
